QI GONG VITALOGY EXERCISE
"All arts lead to the tanden, the bodymind's centre...the most condensed point in the universe."
What if.....
The decline of vitality & flexibility in the body as it ages does not have to be inevitable ?
The energy levels in the body can be increased as you grow older ?
"That man will grow sturdier than he was in youth, he will return to the days of his prime." (Job 33:25)
Qi Gong is a whole body exercise created and developed in China over the last two millennia or so. Basic Qi Gong involves simple postures and movements that are fairly easy to learn. It seeks to develop body synergy, meaning that the whole can be much more than the sum of the parts. Synergy in Qi Gong exercises involves coordinating the many elements of body, mind and energy so that they move simultaneously, producing a greater output of energy with a minimum of effort. The exercises are performed with the intention of strengthening the mind, nervous system, the body's electromagnetic direct current and the internal organs, as well as the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones.
Through the application of total body relaxation the exercises first seek to rid the body of accumulated stress and tension. Next, they strengthen the internal organs and nerves. During this process the muscles, tendons and ligaments are also strengthened and gain elasticity. The body's core reserves of energy are increased due to the gentle, synergistic nature of the exercises which add to energy levels instead of burning them away. An increased sense of well-being and body ease is felt when practicing Qi Gong, with the goal of having most of the aches, pains, tensions and general physical discomforts of life vanish, along with an enhanced vitality.
The Qi Gong at Emerald Waves Healing is based on Bruce Frantzis' "Opening the Energy Gates of your Body" and Yi Chuan ("Taiki Ken" in Japanese).

How to Enhance Qi Gong training :
Qi Gong aims primarily at training the nervous system, at training our awareness. In other words, at training with our mind. This is one of the main reasons it is effective deep into old age. It does not rely so much on muscular power, willpower, stamina etc. Instead it works with balance, imagination, feeling and flow. However, your muscular system, and your will (in terms of persistence), most certainly do receive a "workout" during a Qi Gong session.
1. Letting Go of Goals
Try telling yourself you can already do the exercise. It's easy to do. There is nothing to "get." This helps to prevent trying too hard to master an exercise. Trying too hard creates psychological strain which, in turn, creates physical tension. That is the opposite of what Qi Gong is all about.
2. "About," not "Perfect."
The same as in having goals, if we try to do an exercise "perfectly" we are straining. "About" is not straining. In Qi Gong we are gradually learning to access our intuition, to access the body's intelligence. Intuition is already perfect. It knows how to manifest a working universe. The body is, in essence already perfect. It knows how to look after itself. Would you like to consciously take over your liver's 500 or so metabolic activities ?
3. Letting the Body Move
Once you become familiar with a movement gradually let the body begin to move itself, much like when you go for a walk. You don't have to try to walk, or think about it in detail. You just have an intention to walk, then the body walks with little or no input from your conscious mind.
4. Appreciation
Appreciate your body in that it gives you the opportunity to manifest your desire to do Qi Gong, your desire to exercise. How can you practice without the cooperation of your body ? Also appreciate the wonderful opportunity you have to learn and practice Qi Gong - an opportunity that was far beyond the reach and the imagination of most everyone in the Western world until very recent times. How lucky are we ? How spoilt are we ?!!
5. Balance of Concentration & Relaxation
If you over-concentrate on an exercise, if you try to feel too much what's happening in the body you'll create tension. On the other hand if you relax too much you'll drift off into daydreaming and lose awareness of what is happening in the mind and body, of what you are doing in the present moment. In other words exercise with not too much and not too little elasticity.
6. Paradox : Less is More
The harder you try the less naturally you move. Why ? Because trying hard causes psychological strain, which as noted before, causes physical tension. The less you try the more naturally you'll move. The more effortlessly you'll move. Qi Gong is natural movement which is not strained. Does the Earth strain to rotate on its axis ? Does the wave strain to break on the shore ?
